Seasons of the Year

Whaea Emma’s Maths group have been learning about seasons of the year in preparation for our unit on Time in term 2. Here are some of the Creates made as part of this learning. We used Pic collage, Canva and old-school art supplies. We hope you enjoy our interpretations of each season.

Persuasive Writing

This term we learned all about persuasive writing. We learned about writing an introduction, middle and closing, and convincing people with our ideas.

Then, it was time to put our skills to the test! We wrote our very own stories with lots of persuasion power. Some of us talked about eating healthy, others about why dancing was the best and heaps of other brilliant ideas!

We got to stand up in front of our class and share our stories. It was a little scary at first, but then it was super fun! We used our big, strong voices and made eye contact with our friends. They listened really carefully and even clapped at the end.  👏😊

Now, we feel like real persuasion pros!

Harold and Jo visit Rāwhiti School

During week 9, Harold and Jo from Life Education came to Rāwhiti School. We were so lucky to have two sessions learning all about our basic needs – e hiahia ana tōku tinana. For each session, we walked out to the Life Education van and carefully climbed inside. It was so exciting to look at all of the interesting things posted all over the walls. Harold was really funny and he told us some jokes. Jo ran some fun activities and with Harold’s help, she taught us about the 9 things our body needs. Our body needs water, food, exercise, sleep, oxygen, shelter, safety, love and washing. We learnt what a heart actually looks like and the size of it in our body.

We can’t wait for Harold to come back

Exploring Active Travel

This week we had Jan from Christchurch City Council visit Rāwhiti School to teach us about Active Travel and road safety. As part of the Exploring Active Travel programme, we had some wheel time to practice the skills we had learnt. We had to follow the arrows to travel the right way, there were give-way signs and pedestrian crossings to stop at. We are looking forward to Wednesday when the rest of our class will get to complete the programme.

Check us out on our wheels!

Welcome back to 2024!

Welcome back to 2024 in Papatūānuku! We have had a fantastic first few weeks back at kura after our long summer apart.

In Papatūānuku we have been learning about our cultural narrative and who our studio is named after. As part of this learning we created a huge kōwhai tree with Lisa which now takes up a WHOLE wall. With Courtney, we made little kōwhai flowers to attach to the tree. Each of us then coloured in a pīwakawaka (fantail) and Whaea Emma took our photos and we stuck them on as the  pīwakawaka’s faces. Now we have our beautiful kōwhai tree covered in little Papatūānuku looking pīwakawaka in our studio. Come and check it out!

Trees in our Papa whakaari

This term for Inquiry we have been learning about the New Zealand native trees planted in our Papa whakaari. After learning about the different plants we picked one to focus on and learnt more about what makes it special and how to be a kaitiaki of it. All of us were put into a group. We chose between making a poster or a card game in these groups. Here are our amazing results. Thank you to all the whānau who came and checked these out during our Day of Action on Friday.

Congratulations Amy

Last week we took a moment to acknowledge the huge amount of work Amy has done over the last two years in completing her full teaching registration! Koha in Ata Hapara also completed her full registration. The school put on cake and we all celebrated with Amy throughout the day. Thank you Amy for all the hard work you have put into teaching Papatūānuku this year! We appreciate you!

Beebot Day

After completing a unit on Geometry – Space and Orientation focusing on directions and mapping, Whaea Emma’s maths class got to have a Beebot day. After learning to program Beebots through the online portal, we created our own code to move our Beebots through a maze. You will see us testing our code in the video. We found that when there were problems with our code we had to change some of the directions. We also completed some challenges that Whaea Emma set for us around the studio.

Touch Superstars

Papatūānuku were coached by the legends from Touch Canterbury on some beginning skills. Have a look at what we learned. Thanks to Courtney and Marcella for organising such a fun morning. This is Papatūānuku – Touch Magic
